Taif is a mountain city about 90 km east of Makkah, roughly an hour and a half by road. Its height gives it a much cooler climate than Makkah, which is why many visitors enjoy it as a refreshing day trip, especially in summer.
A place in the Prophet’s ﷺ story
In the tenth year of his prophethood the Prophet ﷺ travelled to Taif to invite its people to Islam. He was rejected and harmed, yet he prayed for them with patience and mercy. For many visitors this history gives the city a special meaning.
What to see
- Masjid Abdullah ibn Abbas — the mosque of the great companion and scholar, buried in Taif.
- The mountain road up to Taif, with wide views over the valleys.
- Rose farms — Taif is famous for its roses and rose products; the harvest is in spring.
- Parks and viewpoints, and local markets for fruit and honey.
On the way
The road from Makkah to Taif passes Qarn al-Manazil (As-Sail Al-Kabir), one of the miqat stations, which matters if you are coming for Umrah from the Taif side.
