In the sixth year after the Hijra the Prophet ﷺ set out for Makkah with a large group of Companions to perform Umrah. The Quraysh stopped them at Hudaybiyah, and it was here that the Pledge of Ridwan was given and the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah was agreed. Many scholars connect this treaty with the revelation of Surah al-Fath on the return journey. Today the place is known as Al-Shumaisi.
Why visit
Hudaybiyah is a place of patience and trust in Allah: the Companions accepted terms that looked difficult, and the treaty opened the way to the peaceful conquest of Makkah not long afterwards. Standing where it happened makes the story far more real than reading it.
What to expect
- A mosque built beside the remains of the older mosque at the historic site.
- A short, quiet visit; most people spend 20 to 30 minutes.
- The site lies roughly 22 to 24 km west of the Grand Mosque on the old Jeddah road, so a private taxi is the easiest way to reach it.
Visiting tips
- Go in the morning or evening; midday summer heat is strong.
- Dress modestly and follow the signs and staff instructions on the day.
